The South 40 was built by Arnie & Lola Hansen in 1977. It housed the Homestead women’s clothing store on the main floor, Book Loft on the 2nd floor, and a restaurant in the basement. The Lounge and Casino were added on the main floor in 1986. After 30 years, the Book Loft and Homestead clothing store went by the wayside, but the South 40 remains a fixture in Sidney. In 2009, the Hansen's daughter and her husband, Ray & Heather Johnson, moved back to Sidney to begin taking over the family businesses. Ray & Heather have continued to run the family business following Lola's passing in 2024. We’ve fed statesmen and famous entertainers, but our most important guests have been our friends and neighbors. We are best known for our superb prime rib and expansive soup and salad bar, and we take pride in maintaining our rustic look over the years. We like to think it provides a feeling of ‘coming home’ to our customers far and wide.

jobsEvery visit to this place is spectacular. I used to live in this area and was a frequent guest. Now during a visit to see family, I opted to stop in for a visit. As always, the experience was amazing. The salad bar is top notch. The steaks are perfection. Service is always 5*. Thank you for such a wonderful experience over the years.
We love it when we find a good time warp restaurant with a salad bar. The salad bar was super fresh, and everyone who was dining when we were there was getting it, too. The decor was straight from the 1970s or early 80s, which is fun as well. We will definitely be back if we are in the area again, and we highly recommend this restaurant.
We absolutely love this restaurant. The steak and prime rib is delicious And they have an awesome soup and salad bar!! We plan to do the all you can eat crab legs this weekend. Service is always great and the food comes very quickly. Best restaurant in town!
It's a really nice place with upper and lower dining. Nice salad bar. It's in a nice location of town. The entire building it's like a pice of history. It's just a nice dinning experience. I'd recommend it to anybody. The whole family can easily enjoy them selves. It's just basically a nice treat.
